January 11, 2005 / Assure Communication to Pharmacy Staff - UPDATED: Pay-Direct Drug Plans with Canada Life Financial Corporation conversion to Great-West Life

As previously communicated, the acquisition of Canada Life Financial Corporation by Great-West Life will impact how prescription claims are to be processed. Since the start of 2004 and continuing into 2005, Canada Life Pay-Direct drug plans will be converting to Great-West Life. As each group is transferred to Great-West Life, the members of the plan will receive a new Great-West Life drug card. Plan members and their families are being asked to present their new drug card at the pharmacy.

Please note that some drug cards do not include the Great-West name or logo on the face of the card, so the change may not be obvious.

How does this affect pharmacies?
Over the next few months, claims sent to Canada Life may be rejected with the message:

If you receive this message, the Canada Life plan has already been converted to Great-West Life. In most cases your patient should have received a new Great-West Life drug card. Please ask your patient to provide the new drug card to confirm the accuracy of the new drug plan billing information. In some situations, the distribution of new drug cards to members has been delayed. Please resubmit the claim with the new client/carrier ID and new group number provided by Emergis' system.

In addition to the client/carrier ID and group numbers changing, the certificate number may also have changed. In these cases, resubmitting with the new client/carrier ID and new group number will result in a rejection since the certificate number does not match.

For example, some Canada Life certificate numbers are prefixed with a "1". As these groups convert to Great-West Life, the certificate number prefix "1" has been replaced with a "0".
